CONTENTS: Conventional Word Order in English University Life: the Purpose of University Education University Life: the Cost of University Education Describing Graphs, Trends and Statistics Summarizing Information: the UCAS Personal Statement The Five-Paragraph Discussion Essay Writing from Sources Citations & Bibliography Reflective Writing: Connecting Theory to Practice Relative Pronouns & Relative Clauses Capitalization & Punctuation Describing a Process.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of this course,  I. you should be able to write clear, simple, cohesive and coherent prose. II. you should be able to describe graphs, trends and statistics. III. you should be able to summarize information succinctly. IV. you should be able to present yourself, your studies and your achievements. V. you should be able to write a five-paragraph discussion essay. VI. you should be able to write a five-paragraph reflective essay. VII. you should be able to describe a physical or historical process.


ASSESSMENT: There will be a 90-minute written test in which candidates have to either, (a) write a fiveparagraph discussion essay; (b) write a five-paragraph reflective essay; (d) summarize and combine data taken from two separate texts; (e) describe, summarize and comment upon data presented in the form of a graph and/or chart.
